The department was established in 1967 with the aim of professional training of highly qualified specialists in cultural and creative activities.

The humanitarian principle of the department is the preservation of national cultural traditions and spiritual values.

Bachelor's degree program 6B11120, 5B090600-"Cultural and leisure work" trains specialists for educational institutions of culture and art, mass media. Their professional task is to organize recreation for the population, create highly artistic forms of cultural and leisure work in the information, cultural-aesthetic and ideological directions.

Since 1998, the teachers of the Department of Cultural and Leisure Activities, as a team of authors, have been preparing the State Educational Standard, model plans and sample programs for bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs in the specialty of "Cultural and Leisure Activities". These documents are used by all universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan that train specialists in this area.

The subjects taught include: history and theory of cultural and leisure work, artistic creativity, imageology, organization of entertainment programs, basics of stage movement, design of cultural and leisure events, speech technique, acting, dramaturgy of folk festivals and performances, etc.

Educational programs are updated annually based on recommendations from employers, that is, new subjects are introduced that meet the requirements of the time. For example, starting from the 2019-2020 academic year, the following courses will be offered: "Modern Media Culture", "History of Intangible Culture-1", "History of Intangible Culture-2", "Culture of Individual and Social Achievement I", "Culture of Individual and Social Achievement II".

Since 2003, a master's degree program has been opened in the specialty 7M11120 - "Cultural and Leisure Work".

The department has a Republican Educational and Methodological Council for the specialty "Cultural and Leisure Work". The Methodological Council for Artistic Creativity, National Traditions and Folk Art provides methodological, organizational and practical assistance not only to the city, but also to the Turkestan region and the republic.

The bases of the educational-scientific-pedagogical complexes are: Zh.-P. Regional Drama Theater named after Shanin, City Center for Children and Youth Creativity, Center for Customs and Traditions, Center for Effective Organization of Youth Leisure. Cultural and leisure work is part of the educational program, including professional practice in institutions of culture and art, culture and recreation. In September 2015, the Department of Cultural and Leisure Services added the specialties of Social Work and Cultural Studies. The name of the department was changed to Cultural, Recreational and Social Activities.

A distinctive feature of the educational program 6B11410-Social Work is that graduates of the specialty are able to effectively solve social problems at the level of an individual, a social group and society as a whole, as well as implement innovative projects and programs, increase their activity in strengthening social partnership in the field of work with the population, training highly qualified specialists in the field of social policy, legal consulting and management of the social sphere in accordance with the requirements of society.

A graduate of this educational program will be awarded a bachelor's degree in social work (5B090500) in the direction of "social work".

In the 2017-2018 academic year, the Department of Cultural, Leisure and Social Work was divided into the Department of Cultural and Social Work and the Department of Theater and Variety Art by the decision of the Academic Council of M. Auezov SKSU dated August 28, 2017 (minutes No. 1).

The teachers of the department take an active part in all cultural and mass events held at the level of the university, city, region and republic.

The teachers and pupils of the department of cultural and mass work conduct events and career guidance work in the Sairam orphanage.

The university annually hosts international winter and summer schools in an online format, bringing together students from foreign and Kazakhstani universities. The speakers of the schools are leading experts from leading research centers and educational institutions in Europe and Asia, presenting their research areas on current issues. The geography of our partner universities is represented by such countries as Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan. Participation in the schools for our students is free. Upon completion of the school, students are issued a certificate indicating the number of academic hours and a transcript indicating the number of credits earned.

2nd year doctoral students Ualikhanova A., Utepova A. completed a scientific internship at Gelisim University, Istanbul, Turkey from 22.04.2024 to 22.05.2024.

3rd year doctoral students Zhumagalieva G. E., Serikkali A. from 31.05.2024 to 29.06.2024 completed a scientific internship at the University of Kliment Ohridski, Sofia, Bulgaria.

Innovative teaching methods are used in the educational process: virtual laboratory work, electronic textbooks, video lectures, business games. All this significantly improves the quality of education and the level of assimilation of the material by students and postgraduates.

The Bologna Process and Academic Mobility Center named after M. Auezov ensures the participation of students and teachers in academic exchange or mobility programs. One of the mandatory indicators of the Bologna Process is the exchange of knowledge between educational institutions of the republic and foreign educational institutions in terms of academic mobility of students. Currently, the Department of Cultural and Social Work successfully implements external and internal academic mobility programs.

Work is underway to attract foreign scientists. There are cooperation agreements with the Moscow State Institute of Culture, Moscow City Pedagogical University, Tashkent State Institute of Culture named after A. Kadyri.

Jurgen Werner Wolfgang Asmus, Ph.D., Ph.D. from far abroad (Germany) and Professor Sadovskaya V.S., MD, Professor Remizov V.A., Ph.D., Professor Tikhonovskaya G.S., Ph.D., Professor Sklyar I.G.
